our story

We are Joe Santos and Maria Gummerson, owners of Santos Family Farm. Santos Family Farm is situated on an 80 acre parcel just outside the small town of Yamhill, at the northern end of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. It is not a classic farm with wide open fields and pastures. Much of the land is rolling hills with large stands of huge Douglas Fir, Hawthorne, and Ash. We’re in the heart of Oregon wine country, and most of our neighbors are grape vineyards. To us, this is the perfect place to grow vegetables, fruit, flowers, and herbs, raise all sorts of livestock, and maybe even wrangle a few bees. more

who we are

Joe Santos

Joe is the co-owner of Santos Family Farm. He was born in Berkeley, California, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He went to school at UC Berkeley, receiving both BS and MS degrees from there in electrical engineering and computer science. He spent most of thirty years working in integrated circuit design, electronics design automation, and eventually computer game design. Joe discovered Oregon in 1999 and began living in Central Oregon part time, moving there full time in 2010. In 2014, Joe moved to Yamhill, Oregon, founded Santos Family Farm, and started his next career as a small farmer. In his spare time, Joe enjoys long distance running, cooking, and flying. Joe’s motto for life is: Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess.

Maria Gummerson

Maria Gummerson was born in California’s Sonoma wine country. She intended to go into medicine and graduated from Mills College with a degree in Biology. Instead, she took a hard right turn and wound up in the high tech world, becoming an expert in business software design. Her transition to farming will be gradual because for now she continues her work for a Silicon Valley company. But farming is in her blood as her father’s side of the family had small commercial farms in Sweden and Canada. For now she advises on farm planning and does the business’ books. She spend evenings cleaning up after ducks, hens, and goats as well as washing lots of dirty farm clothes.
